Ebook About A new physician arrives in the village, but is he all he seems?Susannah Winslade is twenty-six, and drifting into perpetual spinsterhood as she tries to care for her sick stepmother, look after her young brothers and sisters, and keep her father sober and solvent. Her brother Henry isn’t much help, either. She doesn’t mind. Once upon a time, she met the perfect man and until someone like him comes into her life again, she’s happy at home, with her wildflower painting for solace.Samuel Broughton has come to Great Maeswood to make a new start as a country physician. It’s a small practice, but at least it’s steady work and everyone is friendly. Finally he’s reached a safe harbour where he can look about him for a wife. At last he has a future! But there’s something very strange going on at his surgery, and then, just when his hopes of a family of his own might be fulfilled, the unthinkable happens. Is there no escaping the past? This is a complete story with a happy ever after. Book 3 of a 6 book series. A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom.Book Stranger at the Villa (Strangers Book 3) Review :
The clean-cut romance between Susannah and the doctor is very nicely handled while unconventional as a Regency romance in that the usual oppressive chaperonage is entirely missing, and plausibly so. The heroine is, as they say, "past the first blush of youth," which back then meant mid-twenties and spinsterhood and a role as the competent unofficial mistress of the house. Susannah is reasonably content with her lot in life, and then romantic love comes into her hopes most unexpectedly. Then she proves herself special, because she has the courage to seize her own fate. Of course we root for a heroine teetering on the brink of spinsterhood anyway, but Susannah's strengths are admirable. The doctor has various demons to exorcize and he's a good man, but he's also kind of blind to some things. He needs Susannah in his life. Luckily, he gets her, and we get to enjoy their romantic dance.I did gasp "Oh, no!" when I suspected that a certain person was in mortal danger. Despite my unhappiness that some innocent people come to untimely ends in this series, I find myself fascinated with the many plot layers and threads. It's fun to see characters from previous books and series. No significant character ever seems flat. There's always something unique to make that person stand out as an individual. There are several strands of unsolved mystery, since this book is the halfway mark in this series. The wily individual behind various bits of evildoing probably won't be fully revealed until the last book in the series and I am anxious to see how the comeuppance is arranged.I received a pre-release copy of this book (which I had already pre-ordered, because I am a fan of Mary Kingswood's Regencies), and this is my honest review. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Never a dull moment. I loved the first book in this series; liked the second, and struggled with this one. I honestly - honestly - cannot imagine that an individual would be accused of murder and provide no defense AT ALL, to anyone (not even his attorney). Sounds like his friends would have believed him and would have fought for him. He wasn’t shielding someone from a murder charge - he apparently had no inkling of who could have done the deed - just thought that any claims of innocence would be disbelieved. He was pretty much a wimp. Did he want his daughter growing up believing that he killed her mother? Apparently he NEVER thought of that. Had I been Susannah, I would have had second thoughts. I sincerely hope the fourth book will be better. I am also peeved that the author is not giving us any real glimpses at all about the heroes and heroines of the previous books. No quips from Louisa; no lingering neighborhood comments about Marie’s deception, no mentions of them at card nights or church…nada. I am perplexed with all the 4-5 star reviews of this book. I really am perplexed.
